Blog 5 Project Reflection and Working EQ

The Pentagon:
(1) Positive Statement: What positive thing happen as a result of what you have completed so far?

While working at Cal Poly with my mentor, I have started to understand the world of IT more. When people talk about different software and applications, even if I don't exactly know what they are, I understand what they do. For example, during my mentorship my mentor was trying to purchase some middle ware so they could pull information from the middle ware that was connected to all of the databases instead of directly into the databases. At first, I had no clue what he was talking about, but as they talked about it more and more, even though I did not full understand what it was, I understood what the purpose of it was.

(2) EQ Content:  Pick a piece of research or your interview.  How has it helped you improve your understanding of your topic?

My interview has helped me understand why I want to be in this field of work. At first, I picked it because it was in the family business and I figured why not. After my interview, I realized that I actually enjoy this kind of work and I fit the characteristics of someone in this line of work. For example, I realized that I would enjoy the atmosphere of the IT work environment. I enjoy how everyone is friendly, and work on projects together, but also work a lot independently on their part and come together at the end.

(3) What has worked for you so far in the senior project?

So far in the senior project, my mentorship has really worked out good for me. I was lucky to have Tim as my mentor because he is very good at answering any questions I have. I can go to him after school and it is very convenient because he is not too far away. I really enjoy mentoring with him because he makes the whole experience enjoyable like when we go on meetings, he is very casual, but still professional.

(4) What hasn't worked so far?

What hasn't worked so far and finding research that i fully understand. A lot of my articles are very in depth and confusing for me. Sometimes, they get very technical and it is hard for me to keep up. For example, some of my research talks about certain programs and technology that I have never heard of. The problem is that there are so many different languages and programs out there, that it is impossible to know them all.

(5) Finding Value:
  •  What is a potential question you would like to study this year?  (working EQ)
What are the most important learning requirements to become a software engineer?
  •  What do you plan to do for mentorship?  If you haven't found a mentor yet, then discuss where you are currently looking and who you are talking to to find it.
  •  I plan to work up at Cal Poly with the IT team to be my mentor for the Senior Project. Specifically Tim Raymond.
